How to dry a car without water spots
Share
A water spot is what is left behind when a drop of water evaporates on paint. Tap water and rain carry dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium. When the water goes, the minerals stay, as a small ring or dot. On dark paint in sunlight they are hard to miss.
The fix is simple in principle: get the water off before it has a chance to evaporate.
Why spots form
- Sun and heat. Warm panels evaporate water in minutes.
- Hard water. The more minerals in your water, the more each drop leaves behind.
- Waiting. Washing the whole car before drying any of it gives the first panels time to dry on their own.
- Dripping. Water that runs out of mirrors and gaps after you have dried a panel leaves tracks.
How to prevent them
Wash and dry in the shade
Early morning, evening or a shaded spot. If the paint is hot to the touch, let it cool first.
Work in sections in hot weather
On a warm day, wash and rinse one side, dry it, then move on. Do not leave a rinsed panel sitting in the air.
Rinse again if a panel starts to dry
If part of the car has started drying on its own before you reach it, give it a quick rinse and dry it while it is wet. Drying a wet panel is easy; removing spots is not.
Use a towel that does not saturate
A towel that is already full pushes water around and leaves a film that dries into spots. A large, high-GSM towel takes the water off in one pass. We go through what the GSM number means in what GSM means on a drying towel.
Deal with the drips
Mirrors, door handles, the fuel flap, badges and panel gaps hold water that runs out later. Open the doors and trunk and dry the jambs, and blow out the gaps if you have a blower. See drying towel vs leaf blower.
Consider softer water for the final rinse
If your water is very hard, a filtered or deionized final rinse leaves less behind. It is not essential if you dry promptly.
If spots have already formed
Fresh spots often come off with a quick detailer spray and a clean microfiber. Ones that have baked on may need a dedicated water-spot remover. Spots that have etched into the clear coat need polishing, which is a job for a detailer if you have not polished before.
The short version
Shade, cool panels, one section at a time in the heat, and a towel big enough to take the water off in one pass. Then dry the jambs and gaps so nothing drips back.
