Drying towel vs leaf blower: which is better for your car?

Blowing a car dry has one big advantage: nothing touches the paint, so nothing can scratch it. That has made leaf blowers and dedicated car dryers popular. They are not a complete answer, though, and a good towel still does things a blower cannot.

Where a blower wins

  • No contact. Air cannot drag grit across the clear coat.
  • Gaps and crevices. Mirrors, grilles, badges, panel gaps, lights and wheels all trap water that a towel cannot reach. A blower pushes it out, so it does not drip down later and leave streaks.
  • Wheels. Blowing out the spokes and lug nuts is faster and cleaner than reaching in with a towel.

Where a blower falls short

  • It rarely gets the paint fully dry. Air moves big drops, but leaves a thin film and small beads behind, especially on flat panels. Left to evaporate, those become water spots.
  • Dust. A garden leaf blower moves a lot of air from near the ground. Unfiltered air can carry dust and grit back onto wet paint.
  • Time and noise. Blowing a whole car dry takes longer than towel-drying it, and it is loud.

Where a towel wins

  • It actually gets the paint dry. A high-GSM towel picks up the film a blower leaves behind, in one pass.
  • Speed. On flat panels, a large towel is quicker.
  • No extra gear. No power, no cable, no noise.

The risk with a towel is contact. That risk drops a long way with a deep twisted-loop pile, a light touch and straight passes. We cover the technique in how to dry a car without swirl marks.

Use both

The approach many careful detailers settle on:

  1. Blow out the gaps, mirrors, grille, lights and wheels first, so they stop dripping.
  2. Dry the paint with one large towel, laid flat and drawn toward you, roof down.
  3. Finish with a quick pass of the blower around trim and badges if anything is still dripping.

If you only have one, a good towel gets a car fully dry and a blower usually does not. If you already own a blower, use it for the crevices and let the towel do the paint.
